Reviews influence the customer before the algorithm
A potential customer may compare three businesses that all appear capable. Recent reviews can answer the questions the website cannot answer alone: Did the company turn up? Was communication clear? Was the result as expected?
That reassurance can affect calls, directions, bookings and website visits even when the business’s position in the results does not change.
What Google says about local results
Google describes local results through relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews form part of the public information around a business, but they sit alongside the profile, website, links, location and many other signals.
More reviews do not automatically overcome poor relevance or distance. A business with hundreds of reviews for the wrong service is not necessarily the best result for a specific search.
Quality is not the same as perfection
A believable review profile normally contains different writing styles, different levels of detail and the occasional criticism. A perfect score with repetitive praise can feel less convincing than a strong record with thoughtful responses.
Do not pressure customers to mention keywords or dictate what they should write. Ask for an honest account of their experience.
Freshness shows that the business is active
A steady flow of genuine feedback is more useful than a one-off campaign followed by silence. Build the request into the normal completion process so it does not rely on somebody remembering twice a year.
The pace should reflect the real number of customers. A small specialist firm will naturally collect reviews more slowly than a busy restaurant.
Replies are part of the evidence
A concise reply shows that the business pays attention. Thank the customer, respond to the substance and avoid turning every reply into an advertisement.
For criticism, stay calm and do not disclose private details. A professional response can reassure future readers even when the original complaint cannot be resolved publicly.
What reviews cannot fix
Reviews work best as part of a sound business and a consistent local presence. They are evidence, not a substitute for the service itself.
- An incomplete or ineligible Google Business Profile
- A website that does not explain the service
- Incorrect contact details or opening times
- A poor location for the searcher
- Slow responses to genuine enquiries
- A weak customer experience
