Choose what the business is, not what it sells

A category should describe the core business type. A company may sell many services, but the primary category needs to represent the main operation as accurately as the available options allow.

Think about the work that defines the business, produces the most appropriate enquiries and is visibly supported by the website and customer experience.

The primary category deserves the most care

Review the primary category whenever the business changes direction, but do not swap it repeatedly to chase short-term movement. Frequent changes make it harder to understand what is working and may create inconsistency.

Look at the categories used by genuinely comparable businesses, then choose based on accuracy rather than copying a competitor blindly.

Additional categories should still be real

Additional categories can describe meaningful parts of the business. They should not become a list of every service, product and customer type.

If a category would surprise a customer arriving at the premises or contacting the business, it probably does not belong.

Categories and services do different jobs

Categories describe the business type. The services section and website pages explain the actual work in more detail. Do not rely on adding a category when the website never mentions or supports that service.

A consistent picture is stronger: appropriate categories, accurate services, a relevant landing page and real evidence.

Avoid changing the business name to include keywords

The profile name should reflect the real-world business name. Adding towns and services simply to influence search can create policy problems and an inconsistent brand.

Use the description, services and website to explain the offer properly instead of turning the business name into a sentence.

A practical category review

  • Confirm the main revenue-producing business type
  • Check that the primary category matches the real operation
  • Remove additional categories that are only loosely related
  • Make sure important services appear on the website
  • Check profile links lead to a relevant page
  • Record changes so performance can be reviewed sensibly

Categories are useful, but they are only one part

An accurate category helps relevance, but it cannot make an ineligible profile valid, move the business closer to a searcher or replace a weak reputation.

Treat category selection as a foundation. Complete information, useful pages, genuine reviews and a reliable service still matter.
